MISOGI: WHY YOU SHOULD DO THE HARD THING
There’s a moment in every challenge where you want to stop. Maybe it’s the final sprint. The last rep. The third hour of something you weren't sure you could finish.
Good. That’s where growth lives.
The Japanese concept of Misogi is simple: once a year, do something so challenging it pushes you beyond what you thought you were capable of. Something that asks more of you than your usual routine. Something you're not quite sure you can complete.
Not as punishment. Not to prove anything to anyone else. But as a reminder of what you're made of.
At 1Rebel, we’ve always believed that training is about more than aesthetics. More than numbers. More than the mirror. Misogi sits right at the heart of that.
WHAT IS MISOGI?
Traditionally, Misogi is a Japanese purification practice rooted in cold water, endurance, and ritual. Over time, the concept has grown into something more personal: a self-chosen challenge designed to expand what you think is possible for you.
The idea is that it should feel slightly unreasonable. Not dangerous, but definitely not in your comfort zone.
It’s not a resolution you half-commit to in the first week of the year. It's something you actually think about, plan for, and feel a little nervous about.
That might look like:
Running a marathon
Trekking a mountain
Completing a triathlon
Taking on an endurance challenge
Switching off your phone for a few days
Doing something you genuinely don't know if you can finish
WHY WE NEED HARD THINGS
Modern life is set up to keep us comfortable. Food arrives in minutes. Entertainment is endless. And there's nothing wrong with that, but too much comfort, over time, can quietly shrink what we believe we're capable of.
Hard things have a way of doing the opposite. They bring focus. They build a kind of resilience you can't find anywhere else. They create real, earned confidence - the kind that actually sticks.
When you've chosen to do something difficult and come out the other side, everyday challenges start to feel more manageable. Not because they've got easier, but because your outlook on what’s challenging has changed.
MISOGI AND FITNESS
One of the things we love about training is that it’s one of the few spaces where discomfort is still part of the deal.
You show up. The music’s up. Your heart rate climbs. And somewhere in the middle of it, something quietly shifts - you realise you can keep going.
That’s why we think fitness is such a natural starting point for a Misogi mindset. Not because every session needs to be brutal - rest, recovery, and balance all matter just as much - but regularly showing up for something challenging builds a kind of self-trust that goes way beyond the studio.
YOUR MISOGI DOESN'T NEED TO LOOK LIKE ANYONE ELSE'S
This is important: your challenge doesn’t have to be extreme to count.
For one person, a Misogi might be an ultramarathon. For another, it might be walking into their first ever fitness class. Both take courage and involve stepping into the unknown.
HOW TO FIND YOURS
1. Choose something that stretches you
It doesn’t have to be terrifying, just a little outside your comfort zone. If saying it out loud makes you think “can I actually do that?”, you’re in the right territory.
2. Leave room for it to be hard
The best Misogis have some genuine uncertainty in them. If you're already sure you’ll nail it, it might be worth going a little bigger.
3. Build up to it properly
This isn’t about throwing yourself in at the deep end. If your goal is an endurance event, train for it. Give yourself the best chance to succeed.
4. Notice what it does to you
The finish line is great. But the real reward is what you carry with you after - “I did it” mindset.
So, the question is: what’s your misogi?
